How Century City was Developed
One of Los Angeles’ original master-planned communities, Century City was built by the 20th Century Fox movie studios in 1960 as a new home for their film and television productions. Featuring a cluster of iconic buildings designed by some of the most notable architects of the period, it quickly became famous for its green space, beautiful public art and collection of restaurants, retail spaces and high-end office buildings. Today, many film studios still operate in Century City but it’s also home to law firms, media companies and several Fortune 500 firms. In addition to being one of the largest business districts in LA with easy access to metro lines and public transportation options, it is also located in South LA just minutes from major freeways.
Century City was originally planned and developed as a movie studio backlot for 20th Century Fox by film producer Eugene L. Allen. It was modeled after a neighborhood in West Los Angeles, California, where Allen grew up, between Santa Monica and Sunset Boulevard, near Beverly Hills. The name “Century City” referred to Fox Studios being on the same location upon planning by Gene Allen in 1947.
