Tooth extraction
Nobody loves losing a tooth. Occasionally, the only alternative is to remove a tooth, a procedure called as dental extraction. Not all dental extractions involve only pulling the tooth out; the procedure varies with each case.
Osteotomy
Some extractions are more challenging than others. A complicated dental extraction is one that requires modifying the tissue and bone supporting the tooth. Cutting the gum tissue to expose and remove the tooth, or removing bone to liberate the tooth for extraction. A complex extraction is required when a simple extraction is not possible. Unfortunately, a routine extraction might become problematic if the tooth breaks and portion of the root remains in the jaw.
A difficult dental extraction has three main components. An extraction may involve a combination of these elements:
Osteotomy – bone removal to allow your dentist better visual and/or physical access to portion of your tooth or to create an opening for tooth removal.
Making a gum flap is frequently required to reach and release affected portions of the tooth.
In some cases, it may be essential to chop your tooth into pieces in order to remove it. This is called “Sectioning”.
Complex dental extractions normally require a combination of local anesthesia and sedation to keep you calm and comfortable.
Wisdom tooth removal
Wisdom teeth normally arise in late adolescence or early adolescence. Each corner of the mouth has one wisdom teeth. Sadly, wisdom teeth are the most commonly removed due to lack of room. This can influence, infect, and cause issues. Since we don’t need our wisdom teeth, many dentists advise having them removed. Wisdom teeth are enormous and last to emerge, therefore they are likely to be considered challenging dental extractions.
Teeth with extensive roots removed
Canines, for example, have thicker, longer roots that require greater force to extract. Using too much effort on the teeth might fracture it or possibly break the jaw bone. By eliminating some of the bone surrounding the lengthy roots, your dentist can extract teeth with less force. This minimizes the chance of complications.
Impeded tooth removal
If a tooth hasn’t come through correctly due to lack of room, it may be necessary to cut through the gum and bone to remove it. This will help prevent problems like infection, which impacted teeth are prone to.
Damaged tooth
If the tooth to be pulled has already shattered, your dentist may need to surgically access the surrounding area to remove all fragmented parts including the root. Leaving any behind may expose you to infection.
If you need a tooth extracted, your dentist can tell you if you will need a sophisticated surgical extraction and what to expect during the procedure. Please contact Dr. Song of Song Cosmetic Dentistry if you have any queries.
