While a gummy smile is generally considered harmless, some people may feel self-conscious about their appearance.
There are a number of treatments available for those who wish to reduce the appearance of their gummy smile, including laser gum contouring and dental veneers. In most cases, a gummy smile can be easily corrected with orthodontic treatment or veneers. In severe cases, surgery may be required to correct the problem. However, it is important to consult with a qualified dentist before undergoing any type of treatment.

Gum lift
Also known as a Gum Lift, Gingivectomy is a procedure that removes excess gum tissue. The gingiva, or gum tissue, is a soft tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth. The term “-ectomy” means “to remove.”
Thick gum tissue that covers the teeth can make the teeth appear short in some situations. This can be caused by medication, too much bone surrounding the teeth, or gum disease.
Gum contouring is commonly used to improve the look of the teeth. Gingivectomy is typically performed in order to improve the aesthetics of the smile or to remove diseased tissue. It can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including gingival hyperplasia, and gingival recession. It can also be used to treat persistent periodontitis. In some cases, gingivectomy may also be necessary to prepare the mouth for dental implants or other types of dental surgery.
By cutting away tissue around your teeth, this technique helps to move your gum line higher and make your smile less “gummy”. This makes it easier for patients to brush their teeth and prevents bacteria from accumulating in the gums.
The procedure is usually performed by a periodontist, and it typically requires local anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon will make incisions in the gum tissue and then remove the tissue. The incisions will be sutured closed, and the area will be covered with a dressing. After the procedure, patients will need to take care of the surgical site and may need to use a special mouthwash. In most cases, gingivectomy is a successful procedure with minimal complications.
This procedure is performed by Dr. Catharine of Song Cosmetic Dentistry. This one-time operation removes or abnormal gum tissue from around the teeth and will make your smile look at its best!
Smile reshaping
When the gum covers too much of the teeth, they appear longer and proportionate, resulting in the not-so-cute “gummy smile”.
Dr. Song may recommend gum recontouring for the following reasons:
1. Get a New Smile by Gum Reshaping
Gums that have not receded enough after permanent teeth erupted or have receded too much over time may benefit from a gum lift or gum transplant.
2. Replace Missing Teeth
If your teeth are fractured or damaged below the gum line, Dr. Song may recommend a gum lift or crown lengthening for site preparation and eventual tooth repair.
3. A Lovely, Natural Appearance
Teeth that have too much gum tissue can appear short. Extra tissue removal can aid in the restoration of a balanced and healthy appearance, consequently boosting your smile.
4. Dental Health
A gum lift can assist establish enough space between the crown and the supporting jawbone to avoid soft tissue damage during crown placement. There are cases where the extra gum tissue (gingival overgrowth) is removed as a result of certain treatments, such as anti-seizure, organ transplant, and blood pressure drugs. To promote the health of the bone and gums around the teeth, it’s possible that this surgery will also include bone work.
Procedure
Gingivectomy is the procedure to remove extra gum tissue or decrease gum pockets. It entails removing tissue as well as scaling and root planing the afflicted teeth. This is done under local anesthetic. Under local anesthetic, a soft tissue laser is used to raise the gums (optional). The use of less intrusive laser therapy decreases bleeding and speeds up recovery time. Dr. Song may recommend a traditional gum lift, which entails cutting and suturing the gum tissue while sedated.
Gingivectomy is usually performed using a laser or scalpel, and the area is then sutured closed. The treatment area will be anesthetized first. A knife, rotary tools, or a laser are used to remove the excess gum tissue. The majority of sutures (stitches) aren’t required. For the next 24-48 hours, you might feel uncomfortable around the surgical regions, and pain medication will be provided. In most cases, a follow-up appointment after a week is required.
The procedure is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, and recovery time is usually fairly short. In most cases, patients can expect to see some swelling and tenderness in the treated area, but this should resolve within a few weeks.
Every dental procedure carries a risk. Pain, infection, loose / discolored fillings and crowns (recession), tooth sensitivity to hot and cold, caries exposure, tooth mobility, numbness, tooth extraction and/or fracture are all possible complications of periodontal surgery.
